Cloud storage is marketed as the modern replacement for local storage. Neither framing is accurate. Both have real advantages and real failure modes. For most users, the right answer is both — not one or the other.

SYNCING IS NOT BACKUP

⚠️ OneDrive, Dropbox, and Google Drive sync your files. If you delete a file on your computer, it deletes in the cloud. If ransomware encrypts your files, it syncs the encrypted versions. These services have version history, but they are not the same as a true backup. Don't confuse them.

CLOUD STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS

Strengths: Accessible anywhere. Automatic off-site backup. Redundant across multiple data centers. Easy sharing.

Limitations: Requires internet. Monthly cost that accumulates. Provider policy risk. Not fully private — provider has access.

LOCAL STORAGE STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS

Strengths: No internet required. No monthly cost. Private. Dramatically faster transfer speeds.

Limitations: Vulnerable to local disasters. Requires setup for automation.

Use both. Local NAS or external drive for fast access and primary backup. Cloud for off-site redundancy. This is the 3-2-1 rule in practice.
