You deleted something important. Maybe you emptied the Recycle Bin. Maybe Shift+Delete bypassed it entirely. Deleted doesn't mean gone — yet. But every second you continue using the computer reduces the chances of recovery.
HOW FILE DELETION WORKS
When you delete a file, Windows marks the space as "available" but doesn't erase the data. It stays until something new overwrites it. This is why recovery is possible — and why you need to stop writing new data to the drive immediately.
⚠️ The biggest mistake after accidental deletion: continuing to use the computer normally. Browsing the web, downloading files, even just running apps — all write data that can overwrite what you're trying to recover. Stop now.
CHECK THE OBVIOUS FIRST
- Recycle Bin — restore it if it's there
- Right-click the folder → Properties → Previous Versions
- OneDrive/cloud sync recycle bin if the folder was synced
IF THOSE FAIL: USE RECOVERY SOFTWARE IMMEDIATELY
Recuva (free) or Disk Drill are the most reliable options. Run the scan before doing anything else on that machine. For SSDs: act faster — TRIM command makes SSD recovery more time-sensitive and less reliable than spinning drives.
Disk Drill Data Recovery Software
The most reliable consumer recovery tool we've used. Free scan shows what's recoverable before you pay anything.
