Everything was fine, Windows updated overnight, now the printer doesn't work. This is one of the most common post-update complaints we hear — and it has a consistent cause and a consistent fix.

WHY THIS KEEPS HAPPENING

Windows Update regularly replaces manufacturer-provided drivers with its own generic versions. These generic drivers work for basic printing but frequently lose advanced features or fail with certain models entirely. Windows also periodically changes how it handles printer connections in ways that break existing configurations.

💡 The 2021 "PrintNightmare" security patch changed how Windows handles printer driver installation permissions. Many network printers stopped working immediately. This specific issue has specific documented fixes depending on your Windows version and printer model.

THE PERMANENT FIX

1

Get the driver directly from the manufacturer's website

Not Windows Update. Not the CD. The manufacturer's current full driver package for your exact model and Windows version.

2

Do a complete removal first

Remove the printer from Settings. Then remove the driver from Print Server Properties (File menu in Devices and Printers). Clean slate before reinstalling.

3

Prevent Windows from auto-overriding the driver

Search "Change device installation settings" and set it to not automatically download manufacturers' apps. Keeps your working driver in place.
