A slow computer is one of the most common problems we see — and one of the most misdiagnosed. "Must be a virus" or "time for a new one" are almost never the right answer. Here's how to actually think about it.

THE REAL CAUSES

  • Spinning hard drive — The single most common cause. An SSD replacement transforms most "slow" machines.
  • Insufficient RAM — When RAM runs out, Windows uses the drive as overflow. Performance falls off a cliff.
  • Startup bloat — Dozens of programs loading at boot, consuming resources all day.
  • Thermal throttling — A dusty, overheating machine reduces its own CPU speed to survive.
  • Nearly full drive — Spinning drives slow dramatically above 85% capacity.

⚠️ Before spending $800+ on a new computer, spend $100 on a diagnosis. The majority of slow computers are fixable for under $150.

HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR BOTTLENECK

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) while the computer is sluggish. Check the Performance tab. CPU near 100%: software problem. RAM maxed: need more memory. Disk at 100% constantly: your storage is the bottleneck — almost certainly a spinning drive.
